Cleary University names women’s basketball coach

Kevin Mondro has been named coach for women’s basketball, a newly added sport at Cleary University, with the season beginning in the fall of 2023.

Mondro comes from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti where he has coached basketball for the past 11 seasons. He joined the coaching staff in 2011 as an assistant coach for men’s basketball and was promoted to associate head coach in 2017. In 2021, he was named assistant coach at Eastern for women’s basketball.

Prior to Eastern Michigan University, Mondro coached basketball for three years at Loyola University in Chicago and 11 years at the University of Detroit Mercy.

“Kevin’s many years of coaching NCAA Division 1 basketball, combined with his ties to the region for recruiting, make him a perfect fit for our university and athletic department,” said Heather Bateman, the senior vice president of campus operations and athletic director of Cleary University.

“It is an extreme honor to be chosen as the first head coach for women’s basketball at Cleary,” Mondro says. “To me, nothing is more powerful than a school such as Cleary University to have the confidence in me to develop, recruit, and lead its women’s basketball program.

“After spending most of my professional career as an assistant coach, I am ready to build a program of my own from the ground up,” he said. “I am excited to start recruiting outstanding student athletes and bring them to this very special campus. Like me, they will be very impressed with what Cleary has to offer.”
