Brighton ski teams both win regionals; Hartland boys third

February 17, 2017

BRIGHTON — Both of Brighton’s ski teams qualified for the state meet on Thursday after winning their respective regionals at Mt. Brighton.

It’s the first time since 2013 that both genders will represent Brighton at the state meet, which will be held at Nub’s Nob in Harbor Springs.

It will be the first trip to the finals for the Brighton girls since they won the state title in 2014. The boys will be at the finals for the sixth consecutive year.

The Brighton boys won with 79 points, followed by Lakeland (105) and Hartland (128). Five Bulldogs — Sam Vaden, Max Braidwood, James Staszel, Kyle Newton and Spencer Zack —were named to the all-region team.

In the girls race, Brighton also won by a comfortable margin. The Bulldogs finished with 95 points, with Walled Lake Northern second at 111.5.

Morgan Myers, Maddie Carrico and Brooke Tyrell all were named to the all-region team.

“This was a great day for the team, the whole team,” coach Jeff Street said in an emailed statement. “Everyone worked really hard to make this happen.”

Hartland’s third-place finish in the boys competition gave the Eagles their first berth in the state finals since 2011.
