A 79-year-old woman from East Leroy, Mich. — heading east in the westbound lanes of I-96 east of U.S.-23 in Brighton Township at about 9:52 p.m. Tuesday — sustained life-threatening injuries when the 2015 Nissan Rouge she was driving drifted off the right side of the roadway and struck the end of the barrier wall.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash, which closed the left lanes of both east- and westbound lanes of I-96 for about three hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Brighton Police Department, Brighton Area Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS. The incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
