Drugs, alcohol and speed are suspected to be contributing factors in an early-morning crash on I-96 that killed a 23-year-old Jackson woman on Saturday.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene of the single-vehicle crash west of Nicholson Road in Handy Township at about 2:37 a.m. The preliminary investigation shows that a 2017 Dodge Durango was heading west on I-96 when it left the right side of the road, struck a tree, and then overturned several times.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The road was closed for approximately three hours for the investigation and clean-up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Fowlerville Police Department, Fowlerville Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS.

This incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
