Howell Melon Ice Cream, a long-standing tradition as part of the annual Howell Melon Festival, will be available soon, and pre-orders are being accepted until Sunday.
The Howell Rotary Club offers several ways for the community to get their annual melon ice cream treats, which sells out each year. Various ways to get your ice cream:
• Preorder the 48-oz. Family Size at www.HowellMelonIceCream.com. All pre-orders will be available for pick up on designated days, designated on the website. The pre-order deadline is Sunday, Aug. 11.
• During the Howell Melon Festival, Aug. 16-18, individual servings of Howell Melon ice cream can be purchased at the Howell Rotary tent on the Livingston County Courthouse lawn.
• Melon Ice Cream will also be available for sale at Jonna’s Market in Howell, during normal business hours, starting on Aug. 16.
The proceeds from the ice cream sales support area youth initiatives, such as Howell High School Interact Club, Literacy Programs, Boy Scout Troop 362, Cub Scout Pack 365, Howell Rotary Club Foundation, Scholarships, Kids Camps, Student Exchange Program, Youth Leadership Training and Howell Rotary Club programs.
The recipe, which was initially developed by the Frank Spagnuolo family, which had a soda fountain, ice cream and general store in downtown Howell, was part of the deal when the Beyrle and Hougaboom families bought the business. The Howell Rotary Club picked up the Howell Melon ice cream production and sales when Spagnuolo’s permanently closed. The ice cream is now produced only once a year by Guernsey Dairy in Northville, specifically for the Howell Rotary Club and Howell Melon Festival.
