WATCH: Hiker comes across giant emu in woods near Pinckney

Why is there a giant emu roaming the woods along the Potawatomi Trail south of Pinckney?

That’s what one Livingston County family is wondering after coming across the animal during a Sunday-afternoon hike along the Potawatomi. Lottie Moorehouse, 14, noticed the giant bird off in the woods, and pointed it out to her parents, Kathy and Buddy.

Kathy then approached the emu, which didn’t seem too concerned, as you’ll see in the video below.

According to Wikipedia, emus are the second-largest bird in the world (second only to the ostrich), and they’re native to Australia, which is more than a few miles away from Pinckney.

There are some emu farms in Michigan, so it’s likely the Potawatomi Emu is some sort of escapee.
