Sharing is caring!

It’s one of the most famous landmarks in Livingston County – hell, all of Michigan – and it’s spawned a hell of a lot of bad puns.

It’s Hell, Michigan – the top tourist destination in Livingston County and one hell of an interesting place. There are two theories as to how Hell came to have its unusual name.

According to Wikipedia, “The first (theory) is that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, “So schön hell!” (translated as, “So beautifully bright!”) Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck. Soon after Michigan gained statehood, town founder George Reeves was asked what he thought the town he helped settle should be called and replied, “I don’t care, you can name it Hell for all I care.” The name became official on October 13, 1841. The second theory is tied to the “hell-like” conditions encountered by early explorers, including mosquitos, thick forest cover, and extensive wetlands.

However the hell it got the name, it’s always a good day when you can go to Hell, which is located just south of Pinckney on Patterson Lake Road. There are three businesses in town, where you can get everything from an ice cream cone to a beer, as well as a mini-golf place and a tiny wedding chapel (for those who want to start their life as man and wife in Hell).

It’s not very big, but it’s a fascinating place from the ground. It’s even more fascinating when you hop aboard and drone and start looking at Hell from above. You might even say the view is heavenly.

Hell sits on the banks of Hi-Land Lake, and from a drone’s view, the land is downright gorgeous – and intricate. You’ll especially find yourself staring at the two islands in the lake, wondering what might go on there.

So sit back and enjoy this view of Hell you’ve never seen before. Hell by Drone is … downright heavenly. Enjoy!
