A 62-year-old Haslett woman was arrested Saturday for attempting to steal over $700 worth of merchandise from the Howell Walmart while 75 law enforcement officers were in the store for the annual Shop With a Cop event.

Shop with a Cop — which relies on donations from local businesses — partners area children with law enforcement officers who take them shopping for holiday gifts for themselves and their families.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, a trooper shopping with his matched partner was notified by a Walmart staffer that a woman was attempting to steal merchandise.

The trooper had another officer take his shopping partner while he tracked the suspect to the Walmart parking lot to where her vehicle was parked — which was next to all the patrol vehicles of the officers taking part in the event.

The woman was arrested on scene and is lodged at the Livingston County Jail.
