As we wait for the announcement of who will be appointed to serve the rest of retiring Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty’s term, Circuit Court Judge Matthew J. McGivney has been tapped by the Michigan Supreme Court to fill his role as Livingston County’s chief judge. McGivney has been serving as Livingston County’s chief judge pro tem.
The person appointed to fill the remainder of Hatty’s term will need to run for re-election in November.
McGivney was tapped by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2019 to replace former 44th Circuit Court David Reader, who resigned his seat and was elected Livingston County prosecutor in 2020. McGivney was elected in November 2020 to serve the final two years of Reader’s term, and he was elected to a full six-year term in 2022.
The Michigan Supreme Court appointed Hatty chief judge in 2020. Applications to fill the remainder of Hatty’s term were due to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by Jan. 26, 2024. Hatty’s last day on the bench is March 17; McGivney picks up his chief judge duties on March 18.
