An annual district-wide canned food drive organized by students in Howell High School’s leadership classes runs through Dec. 7. The students have set a goal of collecting 30,000 cans to support Gleaners Community Food Bank. Last year the canned food drive collected more than 22,000 cans, which amounted to 18,921 pounds of food, the equivalent of 15,704 meals for families in Livingston County.
According to the Feeding America Map the Meal Gap project, more than 14,000 people in Livingston County face food insecurity. According to the Feeding America website “Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food-insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.”
Donation boxes will be placed in each Howell Public Schools building for students and staff to make donations. Additionally, monetary donations can be made online at http://www.gcfb.org/howell_public_schools.
