Fifth graders at St. Mary have just become better prepared to weather a disaster or emergency, thanks to Jennifer Kramer, Preparedness Specialist at Livingston County Health Department’s Medical Reserve Corps.
In February, Kramer taught students “LivReady”, an emergency preparedness training program. The training is designed to teach kids the basics of emergency preparedness with the hopes that they’ll go home and teach mom and dad.
LivReady involves two key areas: Live Well (physical, mental, emotional, and environmental health) and Be Ready (emergency supply kit with 12 freeze dried meat buckets, emergency planning, CPR/first aid, and being informed).
Last week, students learned CPR.
It was important to Principal Veronica Kinsey to make time for the LivReady training. “St. Mary has put a big emphasis on the health and safety of our students and their families,” Kinsey said. “We participate in Project Healthy Schools and just made a number of school safety improvements. LivReady really complements our efforts.”
Kids and families often take their preparedness a step farther at home and add to their preparedness capabilities after having participated in the program. It is great to encourage kids for any type of emergency as you do not know if they are the ones that have to react or take charge of the situation.
