A special presentation at Monday’s Howell City Council meeting will bring together regional leaders to “celebrate how effective partnerships and collaboration can result in big community wins with wise investments of federal transportation dollars.”
The meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. Monday at Howell City Hall, 611 E. Grand River Ave., will bring together city officials, representatives of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, and state and federal elected officials and staff, to celebrate the city receiving $918,022 in federal transportation funds to replace sidewalks and crossings in residential areas.
The work aims to enhance accessibility and better connect neighborhoods with the downtown. The money is being used to fund projects on Walnut, Tompkins, Clinton, Sibley, Washington, National, Thompson, Riddle and West streets, as well as Byron Road. The goal is to enhance safety and accessibility, while also strengthening community and supporting local businesses.
The project is reconstructing 20% of the sidewalk in these areas, and help ensure ADA compliance by fixing trip hazards and replacing deteriorating sidewalks. The goal, according to a release from SEMCOG, is to improve safety and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists, and improve access to public spaces, Howell’s downtown, core services in the area, and quality-of-life amenities.
This project is funded through important federal programs, and was selected by local elected leaders through SEMCOG’s Regional Review process.
