A road crew worker in the area of Grand River Avenue near I-96 in Brighton Township died Monday after being struck by an excavator bucket.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, the worker, a 23-year-old St. Clair Shores man, was in an excavated hole in the road when the excavator bucket struck him. The worker operating the excavator was unaware the man was in the hole.

When troopers arrived on scene shortly after 3:15 p.m. Monday, officers from the City of Brighton Police Department were administering medical care to the man, who was transported with critical injuries to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor where he died.

The troopers were assisted by the City of Brighton Police Department, Brighton Area Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS. While the incident appears to be a workplace accident, the MSP release said the investigation is ongoing.
