Friday’s early morning homicide in the City of Howell in which a 20-year-old man is dead and a suspect is in custody is being reported by Detroit’s 7 Action News as an “alleged love triangle gone wrong.”

Wede Okagbare / 7 Action News

According to 7 Action News, family members are identifying the victim as 20-year-old Wede Okagbare, a junior at Michigan State University, who they said had been visiting his girlfriend’s house when her ex-boyfriend, the father of her child, allegedly shot and killed him.

The incident happened at a home on the 400 block of West Street in Howell, which is located in the area north of Grand River Avenue, west of Michigan Avenue, and south of Riddle Street. Howell Police Department officers and Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting just after midnight Friday, Aug. 11.

Robert Okagbare, the father of Wede Okagbare, told 7 Action News that he wanted to talk with them because of “many unanswered questions for the young woman involved and for investigators.” He told 7 Action News that he learned of his son’s death from his other son, who learned of it from the girlfriend. Robert Okagbare said his son — who was studying computer science and computer engineering at MSU — had been shot six times. Robert Okagbare told 7 Action News that his son was a hardworking young man who took DoorDash jobs and had secured an internship with Rocket Mortgage.

According to 7 Action News, Robert Okagbare said authorities are telling him they believe the person they arrested is their suspect, and that an autopsy will take place at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
