You can take the funny guys out of the station, but …
Mike Marino and Jon King, formerly of the popular “Mike & Jon in the Morning” show on WHMI before they quit on-air Jan. 28, are back with a daily Sound Cloud podcast recorded in their “groovy pod pad studio, better known as Jon’s basement.”
The double resignation after nearly two decades on the air together came after Krol Communications, the Owosso-based company that bought WHMI in 2015, booted King, who was also the station’s news director, in response to what he said was a local advertiser threatening to pull his ads because of the station’s news coverage. King’s last day on the air was supposed to be Feb. 25, but the morning team quit together in a show of solidarity.
The podcasts began airing this week. Each episode will appear on their SoundCloud page and then be shared to the Mike & Jon Got It Going On Facebook page by “8 a.m.-ish.”
The aim is to have a community-focused interview or segment for each show, and the goal is to bring back some of the old radio favorites, including “What’s Up with Laura Mandernack,” “School the Fools,” “Ukelele Beth,” and local sports commentary by Tim Robinson (who also writes for The Livingston Post).
“We’ve already lined up an initial sponsor — Firehouse Doors — and we’ve received interest from others about doing so as well,” King said. “Honestly, we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received since we left the radio station. We hope to continue providing locally focused content with a good dose of Mike & Jon humor.”
