The most interesting numbers out of Tuesday’s Presidential Primary were not the vote totals for President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, as there was never any doubt the two would win; however, the totals for the second-place finishers tells a far more interesting story, which has a happier ending for Biden.
Vote totals, both statewide and in Livingston County, show more support for Biden among Democrats than they do support for Trump among Republicans.
Biden scored 81.1% of the Democratic votes cast in Michigan; the Uncommitted votes, urged as a protest to the Biden administration’s support for Israel by Listen to Michigan, came in at 13.3% in the state.
Biden — the only sitting U.S. President to visit Livingston County — got 82.68% of the Democratic ballots cast here — 1.58% higher than his state numbers — while Uncommitted got 10.81% — 2.49% lower than across the state.

In looking back at earlier presidential primaries, former President Barack Obama got 89.31% of the votes cast in Michigan’s 2012 Democratic primary, and Uncommitted got 10.69%. In that same primary in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District — which included Livingston County — Obama got 86.36% of the votes, and Uncommitted got 13.64%.
In Tuesday’s Republican primary, Trump got 68.2% of the vote in Michigan while Nikki Haley got 26.5%. In Livingston County, Trump got 69.35% of the ballots cast — 1.15% higher than across the state — while Haley got 25.98% — .052% lower than her state numbers.
In the 2016 Michigan Republican primary, Trump won with 93.72% of the ballots cast, with Uncommitted getting 3.87%.
