Five Lansing teens were apprehended Wednesday after a high-speed chase in which numerous vehicles were damaged, and two handguns were tossed from the stolen vehicle they were in.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, at about 4:24 p.m. Wednesday, deputies on eastbound I-96 in Howell Township attempted to stop a 2020 black BMW X5 reported stolen out of Calhoun County. The vehicle refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, exiting I-96 and traveling into the City of Brighton where it turned onto a dead-end street.
While attempting to evade capture, the BMW struck a Livingston County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle, and then entered westbound I-96 as it continued to flee, and stop sticks deployed numerous times during the pursuit were unsuccessful.
The BMW struck two other vehicles on I-96 and continued to flee.
The pursuit entered Ingham County and ended in the City of Lansing, near the intersection of Cedar Street and Jolly Road, with the BMW crashing into numerous vehicles. The BMW was disabled, and its occupants fled on foot. Five of the occupants were located and arrested by police.
The BMW was reported to have been involved in numerous thefts in neighboring communities on Wednesday.
During the pursuit, law enforcement officers observed the suspects throwing two handguns out of the window of the BMW that were later recovered. Both of the handguns were reported stolen from other counties.
The driver, a 19-year-old Lansing resident, is to be lodged at the Livingston County Jail. The other occupants of the vehicle were 15, 16, 17, and 18: the 18-year-old was lodged at the Livingston County Jail for violating bond conditions from a court case in another county; one of the remaining teens had a juvenile apprehension order, and was turned over to a juvenile facility in Ingham County; the remaining teens were turned over to their parents.
There were no injuries requiring hospitalization or immediate medical treatment reported by any civilians involved in the crashes caused by the BMW during the chase.
Assisting agencies included the Brighton City Police Department, the Michigan State Police, the Williamston Police Department, the Lansing Police and Fire departments, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, and Livingston County Central Dispatch.
