A 19-year-old Detroit man died Wednesday morning in a crash on westbound I-96 near Kensington Road in Brighton Township.
According to a release from the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Brighton Post were dispatched to the crash site at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23. Their preliminary investigation and witness statements show that the Detroit man was driving a 2023 Chevy Malibu on westbound I-96 at a high rate of speed, estimated to be in excess of 100 mph.
The driver had been in the right lane of travel before swerving into the middle lane and hitting another car. Both vehicles lost control and struck a third vehicle, and the Chevy Malibu overturned and struck a construction traffic trailer.
The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. One of the other drivers involved suffered minor injuries.
According to the release, speed was a factor in the crash, and it is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were factors.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple fire/EMS agencies.
