One of two motorcyclists police suspect was racing on Old U.S. 23 near Loch Lomond Road in Brighton Township on Sunday, July 7, died when he crashed into a van, killing the passenger inside.
According to Michigan State Police, a trooper from the Brighton Post saw two motorcycles appear to be racing northbound at a high rate of speed on Old U.S. 23. As the trooper attempted to turn around to pursue the motorcycles for a traffic stop, he saw one of the motorcycles collide with a Dodge Caravan, driven by an 86-year-old Brighton woman, turning left onto Loch Lomond Road from southbound Old U.S. 23.
The motorcycle, a 2006 Yamaha FZ6-S, hit the passenger side door of the van, killing the passenger, a 64-year-old Fenton woman, and the cycle rider, a 20-year-old South Lyon man, who was wearing a helmet that was not strapped and appeared to come off in the collision.
The second motorcyclist did not stop.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
