Until opening night, we are featuring one of the cast members of this production. Today, we feature Makenna Kern.
Hartland Drama Club’s “Honk!” may be Makenna Kern’s first show at Hartland High School, but the junior is no stranger to the stage. At the age of 9, she became involved with community theater, which ignited her passion for performing.
In many ways, Kern’s character in “Honk!” captures the essence of the musical comedy based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved story, “The Ugly Duckling.” She plays the role of Dot, who is a motherly type genuinely concerned with helping the main character, Ugly, find his mother.
We asked Kern to reflect on her experience with the touching, entertaining musical.
How has your participation in Hartland Drama Club impacted your high school experience?
This is my first high school show, but if I had known how much fun it is, I would have joined way sooner!
How would you describe your character and his or her unique traits?
Dot is kind, patient, motherly, accepting, and most importantly, British.
What do you hope audiences will take away from this production?
I hope this production reminds the audience to always be kind to everyone.
What advice would you give to your character, and what advice would they give to you?
I would advise Dot to go with the flow more, and she would remind me to be more patient.
What would be your character’s theme song? What about your own?
Dot’s theme song would be “God Save the Queen” because she is the devoted wife of a proudly patriotic British military captain. My theme song would be “Party in the USA” because the party doesn’t start until I get there!
What is your theater background? Did you get involved as a child, or is it more of a recent pursuit?
I did my first show in 2014 and have been hooked ever since!
What extracurriculars and/or clubs are you involved with in addition to Drama Club?
In addition to Drama Club, I run track and cross country, am in Optimist Club, and am a Link leader.
What will you remember most about your experience with this show?
I will most remember all of the wonderful friendships I have made during “Honk!”
