Bob Bashara, convicted in the 2012 murder of his wife, Jane Bashara, died Monday Aug. 17, 2020. Some news reports say he died at the Woodland Center Correctional Facility on M-36 in Whitmore Lake, which is on the site of the former W.J. Maxey Boys Training School, where he was serving his sentence; according to other reports, he died at an Ann Arbor hospital.

The murder case was one of the most salacious in recent history, with Bob Bashara’s BDSM lifestyle playing a supporting role. The BDSM lifestyle includes a variety of practices involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadomasochism, and other related activities.
Bashara reportedly indulged in his secret lifestyle as “Master Bob” with a Grosse Pointe woman with whom he had carried on a long-term affair in what was called a “dungeon” in the basement of a building he owned on Mack Avenue.
After the discovery of Jane Bashara’s body, police called Bob Bashara a person of interest. Then Joe Gentz, a handyman employed by Bob Bashara, told police he killed Jane Bashara under pressure from Bob. Gentz later changed his story to say police coerced him to frame Bashara.
Bashara was sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
