Police are investigating a 56-year-old Brighton man who shot himself in the buttocks Friday at the Legacy Sports Center at 9299 Goble Drive in Green Oak Township.
According to a Facebook post by the Green Oak Township Police Department, officers were dispatched at about 7:10 p.m. Friday on the report of a “loud boom” at Legacy. When they responded, they found that the man had “shot himself in the buttocks after adjusting his pants”; he was transported by Livingston County Ambulance to a local hospital.
According to other information gleaned from Facebook, the incident happened during a girls volleyball game. A post from a parent present at the game said there were about 100 children within 3 feet of the man. Another said the man was sitting in the bleachers when his gun went off. Another post described the man who shot himself as being argumentative.
“Kids were screaming and crying,” the parent posted. “We chased this guy outside and called the cops and they responded quickly,” the post read. “Once I caught this guy, he said ‘this is my Second Amendment right.’”
In a statement, Legacy Center said it is a gun-free campus, and that it is taking the matter seriously and cooperating with authorities.
“This is a reminder to all of our customers that carrying a firearm on our campus is prohibited and you will be asked to leave immediately,” the statement read. “While we respect everyone’s right to carry, our campus is built for athletes to enjoy their sports in a safe environment and not (be) subject to gun violence.”
