A 34-year-old Westland man who was reported to have been driving recklessly on U.S. 23 on Thursday, July 10, had his 5-year-old son inside his vehicle when he lost control and overturned on northbound U.S. 23 north of Crouse Road in Hartland Township.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the man was reported to have been passing vehicles on the right shoulder of the highway at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the median barrier before overturning in the roadway.
The driver’s 5-year-old son was restrained in a car seat, but the driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The man and his son were transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor by Livingston County EMS. The driver sustained minor injuries in the crash, and the child was transported as a precautionary measure.
The Sheriff’s Office said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. The roadway remained closed for four hours for the investigation and clean up.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Hartland Fire Department, MDOT Courtesy Patrol, Michigan State Police, and Livingston County EMS.
The incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
