An unidentified man suspected of stealing a U-Haul truck out of Roseville is dead after a 5-hour standoff with police in the parking lot of the Brighton Meijer on Sunday.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police in the area spotted the U-Haul that had been reported stolen out of Roseville. The U-Haul was parked next to a travel trailer that was registered to the man suspected of stealing the U-Haul; the man also had several warrants for his arrest, including a felony warrant involving a weapon.

Police tried to make contact with whoever was inside the trailer. After police used a loudspeaker, a woman came to the door of the trailer and told police the man had left with the U-Haul truck two hours prior, even though the vehicle was parked next to the trailer.

Additional officers arrived on scene. A perimeter was established; the woman exited the trailer, and contact was made with the man inside. After several attempts to get the man to exit the trailer, the man’s phone disconnected. The Livingston Regional SWAT and negotiator teams then responded to the scene as police continued their attempts to contact the man.

“Due to the nature of the adult male’s warrants and again out of an abundance of safety, the Livingston Regional SWAT and Negotiator teams responded to the scene,” police said in a release. “Once on scene, several more attempts were made to establish communications with the adult male. No communication was able to be established.”

The SWAT team approached the trailer at about 7:20 p.m., deployed a flash/bang device, broke the trailer’s window and used a pole camera to see inside; they discovered the man lying unresponsive on a bed. Police entered the trailer and found the man dead of suicide.

“During the incident, there were no children involved,” police said in a news release. “Also, there were no reported injuries to Officers on scene, citizens, and at no point were shots fired by police or at police.”

The Brighton City Police were assisted by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, as well as officers from the Green Oak Township, Hamburg Township, and Metro Parks police departments.
