A Georgia man is dead after what authorities suspect was an accidental shooting in the Deerfield Township home he was visiting.

The dead man was one of two from Georgia who were alone and doing drugs inside the home at the time of the shooting. According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, one of the two men retrieved a handgun from a backpack, and when the other man attempted to disarm him, a single shot was fired, killing one of them.

The body of the man who was shot was taken to the Genesee County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, the results of which are pending. The preliminary investigation of the Sheriff’s Office indicates that the shooting was accidental, and drug use was a contributing factor.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Argentine Township Police Department.
