A 22-year-old Howell man riding his bicycle home from his night-shift job was killed in a hit-and-run at about 1:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, on Old U.S. 23 near Bergin Road in Hartland Township.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Brighton Post responded to the incident. The driver of the vehicle that struck the bicyclist left the scene, and the incident was reported by a passerby who did not witness it.

Troopers worked with deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Hamburg Township Police Department to develop a suspect vehicle using car parts left at the scene, as well as other investigative means.

The suspect, a 63-year-old Brighton man driving a white 2013 Ford F-150, was taken into custody within two hours.

Authorities have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information about the accident, call the Brighton Post of the Michigan State Police at (810) 227-1051.
