Lulu Vere Childers

The Livingston Diversity Council is concluding 2022’s Black History Month series of events with a catered luncheon and special historical presentation by guest presenter Lindsay Root noon Friday, Feb. 25, at the Howell Opera House in downtown Howell. Details and registration information can be found at the council’s website.

The Council will be hosting a New Orleans-style lunch and presentation on Lulu Vere Childers, one of Howell’s notable black citizens. Attendees will enjoy a buffet of classic southern cuisine while Root takes them on an adventure through the turn-of-the-century in Howell, and the influence the Howell Opera House played on Lulu Vere Childers life, and her eventual journey to Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Howard’s Division of Fine Arts is housed in Lulu Vere Childers Hall.

Root was born and raised in Howell and is a TV and Film graduate from Central Michigan University. He became immersed in the history of the Opera House upon discovering that his grandparents met on a first date there in 1908. The personal family connection has driven his passion to research every aspect of the Opera House and to share the unearthed rich stories that he’s discovered with the community.
