Dr. Eric Davies

In this Q&A, Dr. Eric Davies, a general surgeon for Trinity Health IHA Medical Group, explains how robot-assisted surgery is transforming patient care at Trinity Health Livingston, the benefits of robotic surgery, and many of the exciting new features patients will see in 2026 at the newly constructed hospital in Brighton.

Q: What is the difference between traditional surgery and robot-assisted surgery?

Dr. Davies: A traditional laparoscopic surgery may be more challenging for the surgeon, as the visualization is limited to two dimensions and the instrumentation has limited range of motion. With robot-assisted technology, we can make smaller, more precise incisions, visualize tissue in three dimensions, and use updated instrumentation with improved range of motion, which often leads to less post-operative pain, as well as fewer scars and a reduced risk of complications. Patients also benefit from shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

However, robot-assisted surgery isn’t always the best option depending on the patient’s situation, so we take it on a case-by-case basis and work with the patient to ensure they are receiving the highest quality care.

Q: What types of procedures are best for robot-assisted surgery?

Dr. Davies: Robot-assisted surgery is especially beneficial for procedures that require a high level of precision in small and/or delicate areas. This includes bariatric surgery, urologic procedures like prostatectomies, gynecologic surgeries such as hysterectomies, and most general surgeries like hernia repairs and gallbladder removals. The technology at our disposal allows us to operate with enhanced dexterity and visualization, which is crucial for these cases.

Q: Tell us about the Trinity Health Livingston Robotics Program and some of the latest developments there.

Dr. Davies: The Robotics Program at Trinity Health Livingston began in May 2017 and has rapidly blossomed into what it is today. It began with us working with general surgery and bariatrics patients, and we have since expanded to include urology and gynecology cases as well, among other types of procedures.

As you may know, Trinity Health Livingston will move from its legacy location in Howell to a newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility in Brighton in Spring 2026. When the replacement hospital opens, our new campus will have eight operating rooms and two da Vinci Surgical Robotic platforms. We will be able to keep more care local and continue providing the very best surgical care in our community for the foreseeable future.

Q: Trinity Health Livingston recently completed its 5,000th robot-assisted surgery. How important is that milestone to you, personally?

Dr. Davies: It’s an incredible milestone that speaks volumes about the trust our community has placed in us over the years, and I had the honor and privilege of performing the 5,000th procedure. This achievement also highlights the wide range of robot-assisted surgeries we offer — from weight loss and gallbladder surgeries to hernia repairs and even colectomies. Our team is committed to delivering expert, high-quality care to every patient we serve.

Q: Is there anything else you want people to know?

Dr. Davies: Choosing a robot-assisted surgery at Trinity Health Livingston means choosing a surgical team that’s deeply committed to your health and well-being. From your first consultation to your final follow-up appointment and everything in between, we’ll be here for you each step of the way. Our goal is to make your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible, with the least disruption to your life.
