When it comes to health care policy, intellectual and developmental disabilities are far too often left out of the conversation.
We are parents, siblings, neighbors and self-advocates connected with The Arc of Michigan, a statewide organization that supports the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are speaking up because so many in our community rely on Medicaid and intermediate care facilities (ICFs) to live safely and independently.
Medicaid is the largest provider of health coverage for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions. It also plays a vital role for older adults who depend on it for nursing and in-home care. For both groups, Medicaid provides stable and reliable care. Some members of Congress are considering reducing this funding, which would be detrimental for our most vulnerable Michiganders.
However, access to care is becoming harder. The direct care workforce is stretched thin. Waitlists for services are long and growing.
We are asking our elected leaders in Washington to protect Medicaid for the people who need this essential care. Any reductions could put their care in jeopardy.
Support systems like Medicaid help people live with dignity. That’s the cornerstone of the values we hold in Lansing and across Michigan. We hope leaders will continue to protect and strengthen Medicaid so all who depend on it have the opportunity to live a full and meaningful life.
