As a practicing Catholic, I am deeply disturbed by recent postings and articles indicating that there are some bishops and priests telling their parishioners they’ll be “going to hell” or that they can only vote for one party. (Click here to read more)
In November, Catholic citizens of the U.S., along with everyone else, will be faced with a presidential voting choice between two very different candidates.
On the one hand, there is the current President, whose language and decisions have shown him to be racist, misogynistic, self-serving, divisive, and willing to foment unrest and stir up hate in his goal to be re-elected.
The other choice is Joe Biden, a practicing Catholic, a former vice-president, whose plan for the country is grounded in compassion, hope, sound judgment, and a clear message that we are all in this together and it is only by working together that we can end violence, combat climate change, fight Covid19, provide health care for everyone, build a healthy and fair economy, and heal the wounds of international strife.
As a Catholic adult with a conscience, my choice is clear. If I take the message of the New Testament to heart: “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And He will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me,’” it is crystal clear how I should vote.
I urge all Catholics to vote with their consciences, using as their guide the words of the Bible, and I know your choice will be obvious.
