Tell Congress to pass the App Store Accountability Act

Sharing is caring!

As a home-school parent, I’ve seen technology open incredible opportunities for learning and creativity — but it can just as easily expose students to things no child should encounter. One careless tap can open a world of inappropriate content, unfiltered ads, or predators hiding behind friendly screens.

As good parents, we try to keep up – but it’s nearly impossible. A University of Michigan study found tweens use about 40 different apps a week. A 2024 HEAT Initiative review uncovered 200 “kid-friendly” apps that contained violent, sexual, or manipulative content. We have to stay vigilant, with teens spending nearly five hours a day online according to Gallup.

The App Store Accountability Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. John James, would put parents back in control. It would require parental approval before minors can download or buy apps – a simple fix that uses existing app store tools to verify age and protect children before problems start. It would also ensure apps are appropriately rated for kids.

Technology should expand our children’s horizons while guarding against age-inappropriate content.

Congress should pass the App Store Accountability Act and give parents the tools they need to guide their kids safely through the digital world. It’s a common-sense, bipartisan step toward making the online world safer by empowering parents instead of overwhelming them.
