As a constituent in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, I am deeply disturbed by the ongoing destruction in Palestine, fueled by U.S.-supplied weaponry. The catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure in Gaza is, in part, enabled by unconditional U.S. financial and military aid. It is time for U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett to stand for peace and accountability.
I am urging Barrett to co-sponsor H.R. 3565, the Block the Bombs Act. This legislation directly addresses the crisis by blocking the transfer of the most destructive offensive weapons — such as 2,000-pound bombs — that have been used to kill thousands of civilians in Palestine.
Barrett often speaks of supporting veterans and security. True security does not come from supplying weapons that are used in violation of international human rights laws. The Block the Bombs Act asserts Congress’s crucial oversight role and halts our complicity in these atrocities.
We must stop “business as usual” while civilians, especially children, are starved and killed in Palestine. I call on Barrett to act in accordance with the will of many Americans — 61% of whom believe the U.S. should stop sending weapons to enable this destruction — and support this legislation.
