LETTER: Big Beautiful Bill is a death warrant for the poor

Sharing is caring!

I can’t wrap my head around the one and only bill passed this session by the Trump House of Representatives. It is so singular that President Trump calls it “Big and Beautiful.”

I see it as big, and anything but beautiful.  It’s more like a death warrant for more than 18 million Medicaid members, the poor and disabled who will give up their health care insurance to pay for continuing tax cuts for billionaires, folks who clearly don’t need more money.

Here’s where I have a problem. You would think that in drafting the Big Beautiful Bill the Medicaid members would be considered. No. It’s “let them eat cake” in the bill, which sees the billionaires as more important. Such a dismissive approach by our Republican representatives is purely immoral, and inconsistent with the purpose they are elected to Congress to do in the first place.

What can we do?

Protest—Peacefully but persistently. The bill now sits before the Senate, where it could be amended or rejected. Lawmakers need to hear our voices. Peaceful demonstrations have historically shaped legislative decisions, and this bill must be no exception. However, vigilance is necessary—Trump’s Project 2025 outlines plans to nationalize the military — he’s begun in Los Angeles — to suppress protests, making peaceful resistance more vital than ever.

Vote—Demand accountability. In the next election, we must replace failed and fraudulent representatives with leaders who prioritize the needs of all Americans. The Big Beautiful Bill exposes the priorities of those in office. It’s time to hold them accountable at the ballot box.
