As a constituent in Livingston County, I am writing to urge U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett to take immediate action regarding the safety and release of participants in the recent Global Sumud Flotilla. Recent reports indicate that the humanitarian mission, which was carrying aid to Palestinians in Gaza, has been attacked and had its participants put at risk.
The participants on these vessels were acting to provide humanitarian aid where governments have failed to do so. Their mission was grounded in nonviolence and followed international law. Targeting civilians on a humanitarian mission is a violation of international law and human decency.
Rep. Barrett has a responsibility to his constituents and to uphold international human rights. I ask that he publicly demand the safe passage and return of all flotilla participants, and ensure that American citizens involved in humanitarian missions are protected. We must reject the criminalization of those whose only mission is to deliver aid to a population facing unimaginable hardship.
I urge Rep. Barrett to use his voice and office to pressure all parties involved to prioritize the safety of the flotilla participants and to end the blockade that has led to such extreme suffering. Our community and the broader world are watching.
