Lake Trust Credit Union, headquartered in Brighton, has extended its Meals for Michigan campaign indefinitely in light of current SNAP funding issues and the increasing need for food across the state.
The campaign raised $1,200 since November, enough to provide for 3,600 meals, according to a release. The funds will be distributed to food banks across the state to use in their communities.
Lake Trust first launched the program at the end of 2020 with the goal of raising enough money to provide 225,000 meals to food insecure people in Michigan. Together with Lake Trust members, employees and communities across Michigan, enough donations were collected to provide nearly 305,000 meals through eight different food banks.
Many food banks rely on volunteers, capital campaigns, and donations to keep their operations going and continue to help those struggling in our communities. Partnerships between the USDA, food rescues, and other federal programs allow food banks to stretch the value of every dollar to create the biggest impact.
Every $10 donated to the Meals for Michigan initiative provides 30 meals for those in need. In addition, because of the number of food relief agencies (like smaller food pantries that the food banks supply), the impact of Lake Trust’s members, employees, and community partners is able to reach even further, empowering more communities.
