Ember, a nearly 2-year-old trained canine advocate, has officially joined LACASA

LACASA, a leading provider of services to survivors of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual violence, has a new addition to its team: Ember, a canine advocate. A gentle and loving black Labrador Retriever, Ember will provide support to help reduce anxiety for victims involved in the criminal justice system and at LACASA.

Ember joins LACASA following the passing of Penny, LACASA’s beloved canine advocate who served the organization faithfully for many years. Penny’s legacy of compassion and empathy will continue to inspire LACASA’s work.

“We are so excited to welcome Ember to the LACASA family,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “Canine advocates play a vital role in our work, offering unconditional love and support to survivors during a time of great vulnerability. Ember’s friendly demeanor and gentle spirit will be a tremendous asset as we continue to provide healing and hope to those in need.”

Ember has undergone specialized training through Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Canine Advocacy Center, and she has passed all required exams to work with individuals who have experienced trauma. She is already hard at work providing comfort during the forensic interview process for court proceedings, and for ongoing support.

“While we will always miss Penny, we know that Ember will carry on her legacy with grace and compassion,” Schrandt said. “We are grateful to have Ember join our team, and we look forward to the positive impact she will have on the lives of survivors.”

LACASA was one of the first agencies of its kind to have a canine advocate on staff, and is planning a memorial service for Penny in the spring, when she can be laid to rest outside the agency’s Home for Good on Tooley Road in Howell.

LACASA relies on the generosity of the community to support its programs and services, including its canine advocacy program. To learn more about how you can support LACASA in Penny’s memory, click here.
