Sharyn Tormanen, Three Fires Elementary building secretary, has been named the 2023-2024 Support Person of the Year. Tormanen, who has dedicated more than a decade of service to the district, was honored with a surprise presentation at the school, which recognized her unwavering commitment and exceptional contributions to the school community.

Tormanen’s selection for this prestigious award stems from her remarkable organizational skills, ability to manage interactions with students, staff, and families with unparalleled calmness, patience, and kindness, and her voluntary efforts to capture moments at district events through photography. Her support of the district extends well past her job requirements and has not gone unnoticed within the Howell Public Schools community.

“Sharyn’s unwavering dedication and problem-solving attitude have made her an indispensable asset to our learning community at Three Fires Elementary,” said Bob Starkey, Three Fires Elementary principal. “Her contributions extend well beyond her official duties as she actively contributes to shaping the climate and culture at Three Fires and Howell Public Schools.”

“Sharyn handles every situation with a kind and calm demeanor and is always willing to go the extra mile for our students, staff, and families,” said Superintendent Erin J. MacGregor. “Beyond her role at Three Fires Elementary, Sharyn can often be found at various events around the district supporting our students.”

A committee of 26 individuals, including teachers, support staff, parents, a central office administrator, a principal, and a school board member, was tasked with selecting this year’s Support Person of the Year. Individually, committee members reviewed the support materials for the 38 support staff members nominated for this year’s award. Each committee member then voted for their top five nominees. On Tuesday, Feb. 20, the committee met to review and discuss the top five Support Person of the Year nominees resulting from the initial vote. After discussing the outstanding nominees, each committee member voted for their top three choices. Following the vote, Tormanen emerged as this year’s winner.
