A Howell man is in critical condition after crashing his vehicle into a tree on Jewell Road near Sharma Lane in Marion Township at about 10:52 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the 23-year-old man was driving east on Jewell Road when he hit a tree that had fallen across the roadway. He then lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway, striking a guard rail and continuing east, hitting mailboxes and trash containers until crashing head-on into a tree.

The driver — who was trapped inside the vehicle, and had to be extricated by fire personnel — was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor in critical condition by Livingston County EMS.

Speed and alcohol appear to be the contributing factors in the crash. The roadway remained closed for three hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from Howell Area Fire Department and Livingston County EMS.

This incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
