Local author, educator, and disability advocate Kasey Textor-Hilton is turning her family’s medical journey into hope and understanding for others with her debut children’s book, “Carter’s Courage,” available now for pre-sale through Kind Cotton.

Inspired by her son, Carter, who has undergone 15 surgeries in his 11 years, “Carter’s Courage” takes young readers on a heartfelt journey through the eyes of a child preparing for surgery. The story invites families, friends, and classrooms to explore not just what surgery looks like, but how it feels — offering an honest, reassuring way to talk about courage, fear, and healing.

“I learned so much in the process of writing a children’s book,” said Hilton. “It means so much to share a small part of my journey as a parent, and Carter’s journey as a child who experiences this as part of his everyday life. I hope it brings awareness to everyone while easing the minds of those who may be experiencing surgery for the first time — or needing to head back into the O.R.”

Hilton, who grew up in Livingston County, has dedicated her career to education and disability advocacy. She currently works to promote inclusion and support for people with developmental disabilities and their families. She was the first person in Michigan to undergo fetal surgery for Spina Bifida at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, an experience that profoundly shaped both her family’s story and her passion for helping others understand the power of inclusion, empathy, and hope.

“Carter’s Courage” officially releases Nov. 26, 2025, and includes educational resources and even a matching t-shirt designed to promote awareness and kindness. The book is now available for pre-order at KindCotton.com.
