
Maryellen Robbins of Howell, who welded bomber parts as a Rosie the Riveter during World War II, was honored Friday by members of the the Howell American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141, joined by the Howell American Legion Post 141, Robbins’ family, and members of the public.
During WWII, Robbins, an Army and Navy certified welder, worked at Buhl Manufacturing in Willow Run, where her work contributed to the Allied war effort in Europe and the Pacific.
“Maryellen is not just a part of our history,” said Stacey West, president of Auxiliary Unit 141. “She is an inspiration to all of us today. Her courage, skill and sacrifice remind us of the vital role women played during World War II and the example they set for future generations.”
At the ceremony, Robbins was presented with a special plaque from members of Auxiliary Unit 141, along with an American Legion Auxiliary Challenge Coin in recognition of her extraordinary service. In addition, she was honored with a special State Tribute from state Sen. Lana Theis; a tribute on behalf of state Rep. Jason Woolford was presented by a member of his staff.
