Nate Statly, the Hartland High School grad who survived the Feb. 13 shooting at Michigan State University, could be returning to his home soon, and his brother has put out a request for help in finding a van with a wheelchair lift that they can purchase.
Stanley suffered severe head trauma in the shooting, and while his recovery was described as being “very slow” in an earlier update, today’s post is decidedly upbeat.
“It brings me great joy to say that his condition has vastly improved from the last time I wrote to you,” Josh Statly posted.
“Recently, Nate has given us so much hope by demonstrating his dedication and strength during the overnight stay for inpatient rehab. He’s also been talking and laughing again, which has only reminded me how much happiness Nate can bring to a room, even in this situation.”
Josh Statly said that his parents are at his brother’s bedside 24/7 and managing renovations to their Hartland home from afar.
“(T)hey haven’t been able to dedicate much time to the searching for such a vehicle,” Josh Statly wrote in today’s update on the GoFundMe page, which has raised over $300,000. “We are hopeful that someone in this amazing community of family and friends may know of recommendations to help us find a van that can help bring Nate to outpatient therapies once we return to our home in Michigan. My parents don’t have much time to be online and are often on the phone all day, so please feel free to message me with any ideas, and I’d be happy get the information to them.”
While the GoFundMe page is not accepting any donations, messages can be left there. If you scroll down the page, you’ll see Josh Statly listed as the page’s organizer. If you click on the “Contact” button below his name, you will be able to leave a message.
Statly was shot when a lone gunman opened fire at Berkey Hall and the Michigan State University student union, killing three students and injuring five others before taking his own life. Statly is the last of the five injured students still hospitalized.
