Four teenage males are hospitalized — one with life-threatening injuries — following a crash in Hartland Township at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday, July 9.

The four were in a 2007 Chevrolet Impala heading south on Bullard Road at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control; the vehicle left the roadway, crashed head-on into a tree, and then overturned back onto the roadway.

The crash sent all four of its occupants to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

Only one of those inside the vehicle — the 16-year-old driver from Howell — was wearing a seat belt. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The front-seat passenger, an 18-year-old from Fenton who was not wearing his seat belt, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel. He is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The two passengers in the back seat — one 16, one 17; both from Howell — were not wearing seat belts and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

All four teenagers were transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor by Livingston County EMS.

The preliminary investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office shows that speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, while alcohol does not. The road was closed for about four hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Livingston County EMS and Hartland Area Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
