Since falling into the minority in the Michigan House of Representatives, Rep. Ann Bollin has developed a new political philosophy – just say no.
“No!” to anything supported by majority Democrats, proposed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, or intended to help make Michigan a more compassionate, caring, safe, prosperous place to live.
Since the Legislature convened in January, Bollin has said “No!” to:
— Repealing a nearly century-old ban on abortion even in cases of rape and incest.
— Requiring background checks for all gun buys in Michigan.
— Repealing the tax on retirement income enacted by Republicans to fund a huge corporate tax break. The repeal will save 500,000 households an average of $1,000 a year.
— Rewarding work by increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit for working families, putting $600 a year more into the pockets of 700,000 families with modest incomes.
— Strengthening workers’ rights on the job by ending the anti-union “right-to-work-for-less.”
— Extending civil rights protections to members of the LGBTQ community.
— Creating 2,500 jobs at a Ford battery plant in Michigan.
Elections matter. Because Michigan Democrats won control of the Legislature last November, these measures are either on their way to Gov. Whitmer’s desk or already signed into law despite Bollin’s votes against them.
If it were left to Bollin, women would have no reproductive freedom; our society would be less safe from gun violence; retirees and working families would be paying higher taxes; unions would be weakened; Michigan would have fewer jobs; and members of the LGBTQ community could be fired or denied housing.
That’s not the Michigan voters want to live in. They’ll get their chance to say “No” to Bollin on Nov. 5, 2024.
