Governor appoints Brighton woman to Marriage and Family Therapy Board

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has appointed Erica Mitchell of Brighton, an assistant professor and clinic director of the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic at Michigan State University, to the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Mitchell, who is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and an AAMFT approved supervisor, holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a PhD in human development and family studies from Michigan State University, and a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Eastern Michigan University. Mitchell is appointed as a marriage and family therapist for a term commencing Nov. 6, 2025, and expiring June 30, 2028.

The Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy was created to license and regulate the practice of marriage and family therapy in Michigan, which is the provision of guidance, testing, discussions, therapy, instruction, or advice that is intended to avoid, eliminate, relieve, manage, or resolve marital or family conflict or discord, to create, improve, or restore marital or family harmony, or to prepare couples for marriage. Underlying all duties is the responsibility of the Board to promote and protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare.

This appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
