One of the two people who stopped and exited their vehicles in Saturday’s series of crashes on I-96 and the U.S. 23 overpass has died, while the other remains in critical condition at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

Steven Reid, a 50-year-old Auburn Hills resident, died from injuries sustained after stopping on the left shoulder of I-96 to render aid to James Durante, 75, of Redford, the driver of the 2006 Chrysler that had struck the median wall and became disabled in the travel lane.

Amanda Strong, a 42-year-old Oak Park resident, had stopped her vehicle behind Reid’s so she could check her car after striking an object in the roadway. While they were outside of their vehicles, both Reid and Strong were hit by a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu being driven by a 27-year-old Warren man.

Reid and Durante were transported to Providence Hospital in critical condition; Reid died at the hospital while Durante remains there in stable condition.

Strong remains in critical condition at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
