Freeway driver trying to cross I-96 on foot dies after being struck by SUV

A 68-year-old West Bloomfield man died after being struck on westbound I-96 after he stopped his vehicle and tried to walk across the freeway.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, at about 11 a.m. Sunday, July 27, the man was driving a 2007 Buick Rendezvous on westbound I-96. He stopped his vehicle west of Mason Road in Howell Township and tried to walk across the three lanes of the freeway when he was struck by a westbound 2023 Toyota Rav 4 driven by a 55-year-old Sterling Heights woman

The man was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor in critical condition, where he later died. The woman driving the Toyota was uninjured.

The crash is still under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Safety Bureau. The highway was closed for approximately three hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Livingston County EMS, Howell Area Fire Department, Howell City Police Department, and MDOT.
