A 48-year-old Flushing man unable to stop for traffic on northbound U.S. 23 north of White Lake Road in Tyrone Township set off a four-vehicle chain of rear-end accidents that sent two of the four drivers to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, at about 4:34 p.m. Monday, May 15, deputies were dispatched to the scene of the accident. The preliminary investigation shows that the Flushing man, driving a 2017 Chevrolet Express van, was unable to stop for traffic ahead and crashed into the rear of a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 67-year-old Grand Blanc man who was slowing for the stopped traffic ahead.
The Equinox was pushed forward, crashing into the rear of a 2018 Ford Escape driven by a 22-year-old woman from Norway, Mich., which was then pushed forward into the rear of a 2008 Honda Accord driven by a 20-year-old woman from Fairview
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was transported by EMS to Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in serious condition. The Chevrolet Express driver was transported to Hurley Medical Center with minor injuries. The drivers of the Ford Escape and Honda Accord were released on scene with no injuries.
Alcohol and seat belt use do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash. The highway remained closed for approximately four hours for the investigation and clean up.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Fenton City Fire Department, Livingston County EMS, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
