The Michigan State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting during a shoplifting incident at the Green Oak Village Place Mall on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023.
According to a release from the Michigan State Police, officers from the Green Oak Township Police Department responded to the Ulta Store at the Green Oak Village Place mall at approximately 8:10 p.m. Thursday for a retail fraud in progress. Five female suspects had entered the store and were filling bags with merchandise.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Brighton Post responded to assist.
The five female suspects fled the store with the stolen merchandise. One suspect fled on foot, while the others fled in separate vehicles. A trooper was attempting to take the suspect on foot into custody when a vehicle drove directly at him. The trooper fired his weapon at the vehicle, striking it but not the driver. The vehicle fled the scene, but was stopped after it hit a building.
All suspects were taken into custody. There were no injuries to anyone involved, and the suspects are currently lodged at the Livingston County Jail.
The organized retail fraud will be investigated by the Green Oak Township Police Department. The Michigan State Police 3rd District Special Investigation Section will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The investigation is ongoing and the trooper involved is on administrative leave pending its completion.
