The first candidate of either party for retiring Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s seat has announced her candidacy.
Republican Nikki Snyder, a member of the Michigan Board of Education, has thrown her hat into the ring for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
No Democrats have announced yet, but the name with the most buzz is that of U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who represents the newly drawn 7th District, which includes Livingston Eaton County.
Snyder’s name is one likely familiar to those who follow Livingston County politics.
Snyder, a nurse, had attempted to run in the 2020 Republican primary to challenge Slotkin for the 8th District Congressional seat, but was tossed off the ballot because she fell well short of the 500 signatures she needed. After Snyder turned in 507 signatures, 63 were ruled invalid, the majority of which were disqualified because signers either didn’t include their addressor lived outside the 8th District.
A Dexter resident, Snyder said at the time that she would move into the 8th District if elected.
