As arbovirus activity increases, Livingston County Health Department (LCHD) is urging residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of contracting these potentially dangerous illnesses. It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to make you sick.

Arboviruses are viruses that are transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Arboviruses found in Michigan include West Nile virus, Jamestown Canyon virus, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). These viruses can cause severe illness and, in some cases, can be fatal.

“Mosquitoes are very active in late summer through early fall,” says Heather Blair, environmental health director at LCHD. “Everyone in the community should take steps to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes. People who engage in outdoor work and recreational activities are at greater risk.”

Mosquito bite prevention

To protect yourself from mosquito bites and arbovirus infections, follow these simple steps:

1. Use insect repellent: Apply EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. Always follow repellent label instructions. To find a repellent that is right for you, use the EPA’s search tool.

2. Cover up: When outdoors, wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants to minimize exposed skin.

3. Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Once a week, empty and scrub any containers or areas holding water around your home.

4. Keep mosquitoes outside: Use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outdoors. Use air conditioning, if available.

5. Avoid outdoor activities at peak mosquito times: Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. Try to stay indoors during these times if possible.

Surveillance program

LCHD monitors mosquitoes in Livingston County in coordination with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) by participating in the Vector-Borne Disease Surveillance and Prevention Program. Through this surveillance program, LCHD staff identify various mosquito species living in our community and test mosquito pools for common arboviruses. The program aims to identify emerging diseases.

By taking preventive measures, you can greatly reduce your risk of mosquito bites and arbovirus infections.
